NMASBO Scholarships

Scholarship Sponsored by New Mexico Association of School Business Officials

Each year, NMASBO grants as many as six scholarships, each worth $1,500, to exceptional high school seniors throughout New Mexico. A minimum of one scholarship recipient is chosen from each region. The selection committee evaluates applicants based on their demonstrated financial need and a well-defined plan for utilizing the scholarship.

In 2025, the Scholarship Committee will choose two individuals from the pool of applicants to be awarded the 16th Annual Joni Heinsohn Memorial Scholarship and the 34th Annual Joey Montaño Memorial Scholarship, each worth $2,500. The recipients of these scholarships must fulfill the same eligibility requirements as stated in the scholarship guidelines and application. The memorial scholarships will be given to the applicants who most effectively show financial need and a well-planned use for the scholarship funds.

The NMASBO Board created the Annual Joni Heinsohn Memorial Scholarship to commemorate Joni’s enduring influence on the association. Joni’s commitment and hard work were crucial to the success of NMASBO. Each year, the recipient of this scholarship is chosen as a testament to Joni’s consistent dedication to excellence in all her endeavors.

In 2023, the NMASBO Board established the Annual Joey Montaño Memorial Scholarship to honor the enduring contributions of Joey Montaño, who served as Executive Director from 2003 to 2018. Joey’s vision, commitment, and relentless work ethic played a key role in transforming NMASBO into the successful organization it is today. When Joey assumed leadership, the association was maintained by a committed board and president, all of whom were also full-time School Business Officers. Under Joey’s leadership, NMASBO transitioned from a struggling organization to a dynamic, progressive association. Joey’s innovative thinking, resourcefulness, and extensive network of connections set the groundwork for the association's current success.

2026 Scholarship Guidelines

Submission Procedure: All applications must be submitted digitally via the Reviewr platform. No other forms of submission will be accepted.

Complete Applications: Only fully completed applications will be taken into consideration. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated.

Application Window: The application portal will be accessible from Monday, November 3, until Friday, December 12. Applications received outside of this timeframe will not be considered.
